Shop Supervisor (Repair Center)

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in a shop environment.   The Senior Supervisor leads a team responsible for all stages of each repaired product prior to shipment from the Repair Center.  Supervises machine/weld/and mechanical shop operations in accordance with plant policies and procedures in such a way to be compliant with all Health, Safety, and Environmental (legal) requirements and customer satisfaction.
 
Job Duties and Responsibilities
 
  • Ensures a safe working environment for all employees, visitors and contractors by putting safety first in the day-to-day operations of the Repair Center.
  • Supervises and monitors day-to-day Repair Center machine, mechanical and weld shop operations.
  • Monitors and ensures hour requirements are met or exceeded by enforcing standards and supporting employees with timely, technical guidance.
  • Responsible for work schedule and assigning work/jobs to machining, mechanical, and weld cell employees to ensure customer commitments are met.  This includes work assignments/rotations, employee breaks, overtime assignments and back-up for absent employees.
  • Collaborates with and assists the Repair Center Manager in building and developing the Repair Center – interviewing, leading, directing, performance management, training and development. 
  • General understanding of documents such as blueprints, work orders and manuals. General knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerances, welding processes, and mechanical assembly.
  • Build and enforce PM and maintenance schedules.
  • Ensures continuity of work by ensuring the Night Shift is apprised of all job requirement and changes.
  • Trains and coaches employees to ensure shop quality and safety standards are met or exceeded.
  • Keeps Repair Coordinator apprised of shop status and escalates issues to Repair Center Manager as may be appropriate.
  • Determine and establish methods and working processes for the most specialized and complex jobs.
  • Control the quality of all work done and effectively communicate with QA/QC Personnel.
  • Solve complex problems and act as the resource person for all shop activities.
  • Formulate all working procedures used for optimizing the quality of work and efficiency.
  • Must be reliable and display attention to detail: enforces accuracy and completion of work routers, reports, and inspections.
  • Completes required work and safety reports.
  • Maintains good housekeeping practices.
  • Works with Repair Coordinator to ensure routers have required detail.
  • Works with Project manager to insure quoted hours are achievable and tooling costs are incorporated.
  • Reviews tooling needs for each job.
  • Monitors and sets up training as needed for entire shop personnel
  • Monitors incoming parts deliveries to insure appropriate actions are in place to achieve turnaround KPI’s
  • Ensures all phases of the routers are signed off and QA/QC is performed at each step prior to moving to the next step in the router.
  • Monitors supplies and tooling inventory
  • Reviews each job for compliance to planned costs and times
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties and/or other special projects as required
 
 
 
 
Requirements
 
 
  • Miniumum of 2 years of experience in a Lead or Supervisor capacity in a heavy industrial industry, Mining Equipment or like industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years of shop experience within the heavy industrial, Mining Equipment industry or like industry.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Reads and understands English language (alpha and numeric) sufficient to read and understand requisitions, drawings, and engineering specifications.
  • Possesses intermediate math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, decimals and fractions, geometry) for measurement, testing and problem resolution.
  • Ability to read and understand shop drawings and details, set up and adjust machining equipment to fabricate assemblies within tolerances required.
  • Must have knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, use, repair, and maintenance; knowledge of design techniques and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blue prints, drawings, and models.  
  • Observes safety regulations and exhibits a high concern for safety.
  • Basic knowledge of destructive and non-destructive tests
  • Ability to analyze situations and problems, ability to detect technical discrepancies
  • Knowledge of industrial machinist processes and methods.
 
Other Skills and Abilities
 
  • Bends, stoops, crouches, twists, leans, reaches, picks up and lifts raw materials of various weights and of various lengths.
  • Lifts up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently.
  • Demonstrates manual dexterity sufficient to properly operate welding and related machines.
  • Visual acuity to operate machines where the job is at or within arm’s reach.  
  • Utilizes oral communication to convey detailed or important instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Able to wear safety apparatus/clothing when required.
  • Perceives the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels.  Receives detailed information through oral communication.
  • Position requires work both inside and outside the building in various weather conditions.
  • This position requires repetitive or periodic movement based upon demand for an order.
